This stern-faced gentleman is one of my fore bearers, Charles Durand.
He was a native of France—a fact my mom was always proud of—born in 1806. He arrived in New Orleans in 1820 and eventually died in St. Martinville (famous for Evangeline of Longfellow fame, and Inez Durand, my mom-to-be).
