September 30 Meeting Summary

The planning committee for the Oscar and Felicie Durand Family Reunion met on Sept 30th, 2006. Bill Reed gave his Teasurer's report telling the committee that so far we have 270 confirmed cousins coming to the reunion. He said we have about $5300 in the bank account. He gave Jackie Mire a check for $250 made out to the City Of St. Martinville to pay the balance owed on the rental of the rec center for the reunion. Jackie said she would deliver the check to Glenda at the rec center on Monday and also ask about how many chairs the rec center could accommodate. She will get back to the committee with that info at the Oct. 14th meeting.

The committee also voted to rent an additional 150 chairs for the day of the reunion. Suzy volunteered to make arrangements for the chairs to be delivered to the center on Nov. 24th and picked up on Sat. Nov. 25th after 4 o'clock. The committee decided not to rent any port o lets for the reunion, deciding that the rec center bathrooms should be able to accommodate everyone at the reunion.

It was voted that the reunion would purchase two banners for the reunion and the wording on the banners would read, "Welcome to the Oscar and Felicie Durand Family Reunion."

It was voted by the committee to ask Virginia to make a map of the points of interest in the St. Martinville, area for a self guided tour by out of town cousins attending the reunion.  i.e., the 5 Durand siblings homes, the St. Martin De Tours Church, St. Michael's Cemetery, with list of family graves, etc.

It was decided that we would recognize and have one of the Emcees read the names of the 6 surviving children of the 13 Durand Siblings.

Suzy said she would contact Channel 3 and 10 TV Stations to see if they would be interested in doing a human interest story on the reunion.

It was decided that we would buy 5 cases of water for the day of the reunion in case someone did not know they had to provide their own drinks. Jackie volunteered to buy the water.

Suzy was given the names of the people who would tell the family stories at the reunion.

More tweaking of the reunion day agenda was done.

Oct. 14th at 11 o'clock at Sicily's was set as the date for the next planning meeting and the meeting adjourned.

July 2006 Meeting Summary

The Evolution of the Reunion
How it started
On a Spring day in 2005 three Durand cousins got together for lunch. Spike Hough, grandson of Albert Durand, Virginia O'Brien Reinhardt, granddaughter of Gilbert Durand and Jackie Mire, granddaughter of Stella Durand had an idea for a big Durand Family Reunion. They thought they could get the descendants of the 13 children of Oscar Durand and Felicie DeBlanc Durand to gather for a Family Reunion.

They kicked the idea around that day at lunch and decided to meet again in a month and continue planning. At the next meeting it dawned on them that they may have bitten off more than the three of them could chew. They decided to get representatives from as many of the 13 Durand children as they could to join them and form a planning committee. They got on their computers and cell phones and rounded up their Durand cousins, some they had not seen in years, some they did not know at all.

  • Suzy Shea Kimball was recruited to represent the Blanche Durand Branch.
  • Bill Reed and Rita Rae Reed Terradot were asked to represent the Oswald Durand Branch
  • Ken LaFleur joined the cousins representing the Evelyn Durand Branch
  • Spike Hough would represent the Albert Durands
  • Virginia O'Brien Reinhardt became representative of the Gilbert and Therese Durands
  • Jackie Mire would represent Stella and Corrine Durand branches

So was born the planning committee for the Big "D" Family Reunion. The committee met every month and the reunion began to slowly take shape. Through the efforts of the planning committee, cousins from 9 of the 13 children of Oscar and Felicie Durand were contacted.

  • One of the Durand daughters, Agnes Durand married Henri Dumay and moved to France in the early 1900's. Ken LaFleur, son of Agnes' sister, Evelyn Durand, had kept in touch with his French cousins and was able to invite them to the reunion.

The Planning committee choose Saturday November 25, 2006 as the date for the reunion. The committee asked Oswald Durand cousin, Glenn Currier, if they could use his website to post news about the reunion. Glenn graciously agreed and his website soon became the heart of the reunion.

Invitations
An address list was compiled and invitations for the reunion were sent out to all of the Durand cousins of the 9 Durand children. The invitations for the reunion were designed by Nikki and Terry Young.  Nikki is the Great Granddaughter of Stella Durand.

Decision Time
Costs and Tee Shirts
After some discussion and email exchanges it was decided that the cost to attend the reunion is $45 per household, not per family. A reunion Tee Shirt is being offered for an additional $6 per shirt.

Gatherings and Food
As discussions proceeded it became clear that, for some, the Saturday afternoon of the actual reunion would not be enough.

  • Plans are being made to gather on the Friday night before the reunion and again on Sunday after the reunion.
  • The place to meet has not yet been decided.

Food: The reunion Day meal will be catered and the cost of the meal is included in the $45 charge per household.

Prizes: There will be prizes given, including prizes for the children's games. Cliff Mire, husband of Jackie Mire, makes boxes with hidden drawers out of Atchafalaya Cypress and has donated several of his original boxes for prizes at the reunion.

Location: The Reunion will be held at the Recreation Center in Magnolia City Park in St. Martinville, La. The hours for the reunion will be 10 a.m until 4 p.m. The committee is working on the Day's activities and any new info will be posted on Glenn's website.

The Near Future: The Planning Committee's next meeting will be held July 15th 2006. Minutes for the July meeting will be posted on Glenn's website www.tocreate.net.
