A Poem by: Joe David
The Poppy’s Burden

The poppy sways in the breeze
bending on so slim a stem
as though bowed from the weight
of carrying too heavy a burden.

The poppy awaits the man
who comes with a blade
to slice it’s side
and steal its precious blood.

Oh beautiful flower of joy
which will it be this time?
Will you mollify the pain of the injured
or increase the injury to the pained?
